It sounds like the girl is a bit confused….5
…but somehow you get the idea that it’s all in fun. This pop/rock recording makes for a fine debut. Katy does seem to have a bit of gender dysphoria…she kisses girls when drunk [and enjoys it], sometimes she feels like “one of the boys”, and “ur so gay” and “hot n cold” depict her boyfriend has having some confusion of his own {PMS, indeed}. The lyrics, though are clean…well, there is a line in “if you can afford me” about not being a piece of a**…and I, at least, was left with the impression that she doesn’t really mean it, and is just having a good time with us. “i kissed a girl” is not only not offensive, it’s my favorite song on the album…really catchy.

Katy is a pretty girl, with a clear, strong, voice…she should go far. The album is well recorded, and presented, with great artwork. The recording may be a bit more “rock” than I like, but only a bit. She manages to take themes which some could use to gross us out, and make a real “feel good” album…that’s an accomplishment, right there. You go, girl…

Addendum: I liked it when I first got it, but this is a record that actually IMPROVES with repeated listening…Very high recommendation. Six stars, at least.

Not your little sister’s pop4
After lately hearing plenty of songs I like that don’t have a CD full of similarly good stuff to back them up, I was pleased to finally find a must-buy when I was impressed by “I Kissed a Girl” on the radio. Katy’s CD is exactly the kind of debut I like, showing off a range of song styles but still fitting firmly within the pop genre. I’ll begin by debunking two criticisms I’ve heard: The CD is supposedly too slickly produced, and some say she tries to be edgy without going far enough. Such cookie-cutter criticisms should be saved for cookie-cutter groups. Claims of overproduction ring false when you can occasionally hear vocal slips that add humanity, and as for edginess I think one of the things that pleases me most about this CD is that Katy is very good at pulling off brash and irreverent flair without being obnoxious. I wish I could say the same of a lot of other acts.

Pop is Katy’s strong suit but her songs mostly resist pigeon-holing past that point. Not a single song fits the bubblegum Disney mold, another bogus criticism I’ve seen aimed her way. “I Kissed a Girl” is almost bouncy rock, unlike anything else I’ve heard on the radio. The title track, “Waking Up in Vegas”, and “Self-Inflicted” are the closest to “classic” pop that she gets; the latter two are among the best tracks on the CD. “Hot n Cold” is another mold-breaker though, reminding me very much of an early ’80s sound with a more modern twist to some of the vocals. And I would be remiss not to mention “Ur So Gay”, easily the most playful song on the album but one I would hardly classify as pop; hearing only this single would give anyone a very distorted picture of Katy’s repertoire because it’s little like any of her other songs musically, but among the rest it doesn’t feel out of place.

While most of the rest of the CD is likable pop, there are a few slower ballads like “I’m Still Breathing”, “Lost”, and “Thinking of You”. Each of these is different in some way, but “Thinking of You” has the strongest melody and complements that with beautiful vocals. Two days after first playing the CD, this song found its way back into my head and I was pleased to remember it so well.

Katy Perry is a breath of fresh air in an industry that seems to like churning out one-hit wonders with boring CDs, one-style-fits-all vocalists who have no ability to mix it up, or in-your-face yet unoriginal attitude. I like her style, range, and voice, and she manages through it all to be boisterous but not annoying. For me this is a winner.

Katy Perry’s Strong Debut4
There’s a lot to like about Katy Perry. Her song “I Kissed a Girl” is reigning high on the iTunes chart right now. For those unfamiliar with her, I’d place her sound and style in the genre of pop. Her sound is reminiscent of 80s pop and with a bit of a edge that makes her comparable to other new acts like Sarah Bareilles. Don’t be fooled by the cover; Katy Perry’s music is far from frilly and girly. In fact, often times it’s the opposite as she spins out songs and lyrics that have caught the attention of pop royalty such as Madonna.

What you’ll like about “One of the Boys” is the chances Katy Perry takes with her lyrics. The song “I Kissed a Girl” isn’t truly groundbreaking or edgy but it’s a rock-style song with Perry bending gender a bit, taking on the position of a ‘girl gone wild’ whose just out to have fun and experiment rather than looking for love. The other stand-out song “Ur So Gay” plays with the beat, with Perry’s voice dripping and hanging off words and phrases as she rips into her loving boyfriend whose qualities brings questions to her mind. This is what makes Katy Perry so appealing; her music doesn’t sound like anything being played on American radio and sounds very fresh and appealing to all audiences. Other stand out songs are “Lost” which is rather ballad-like without being overly mushy and features some great vocal work on her behalf, the very 80s-pop orientated “Mannequin” and “Self Inflicted”.

What you may not like are the down-tempo songs that definitely feel like a let down compared to her up-temp songs. While these are okay, they distract and feel like filler-tracks or like something that any other new-act would put out. They sound far too safe for an artist that has the ability to pen some great lyrics and match it to a unique and fun beat. These tracks make the cd drag out and feel a bit unbalanced.

In all, a great debut that deserves your attention and is worth your money. Check it out.

Cheap does not mean good.2
Chopin is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of piano music to have ever lived. His music deserves as much money as you could spend on it. Don’t let a cheap price alone tempt you. The performances in this collection sound passionless and amateur compared to the sublime recordings of Rubenstein, Horowitz, Pollini, or Perahia. Please do yourself a favor: if you can’t afford more for Chopin right now, it’s better you wait and save up to reward yourself later with much better performances of this life-changing music.

You really can’t beat the price!4
I’m still listening to them to check for errors and 2/3rds into the whole lot, but on sheer value alone this gets 5 stars. I have to dock a star because I have to turn the volume up to keep these songs at the same level as other songs I have (a simple but annoying fix considering there are 160 of these songs to fix), and I don’t like some of the renditions as much as other versions I have (some of the songs are played slower that I’d like). All in all this is really comprehensive and a HUGE bargain for someone who wants a hefty sampling of Chopin’s work but isn’t ready to plunk down more money for different renditions (as another reviewer had suggested).

Whats the catch?5
too good to be true, like a 150 pieces for 5 bucks? whats the catch i say? whats the catch!?!

Awesome…5
I’m a huge Blur fan. That’s what first lead me to this cd. I’ve followed everything they’ve done, be it Graham Coxon’s solo stuff, or Damon Albarn’s soundtrack talents for “Ravenous.”

Then, the icing on the cake: Kid Koala, turntablist extraordinaire. If you are at all into underground (i.e., true) hip-hop, you’ve probably already come across Deltron 3030’s release featuring Kid Koala and Del the Funky Homosapien, along with about 200 other guest appearances. If not, check it out at once. And for a TRUE showcase of Kid Koala’s talents, check out his solo cd on the Ninja Tune record label, “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.” It is beyond awesome, and simply amazing.

This, giving its background, could not miss. It doesn’t. From start to finish, it is incredible. I remember first seeing the video for “Clint Eastwood” on MTV2. If the animation and humor of these guys don’t get you, the music certainly will. Tripped out music with cool, almost indifferent, vocals. The beats, and samples are, as always with the Kid, without fault.

Definitely give this one a go. And, as a special bonus, the cd comes as an enhanced cd, with some very cool animation, and even better wallpaper and screensaver additions. With this cd, you will be given the key to Murdoc’s Winnebago. Next stop, figure out how to use it to get in.

Enjoy.

The future of modern music and what it does to your stomach.5
I’m leaning against the wall of the bathroom wondering if I’m gonna throw up.

It’s too much.

In order to write this little review I tried to grapple with this album, I tried to swallow it whole. I tried to digest it and I hurt myself. This album is too rich and too multidepthed to allow a simple synopsis. It’s too complex to digest quickly. There are too many styles and too many layers. This is a dizzying collection of endless experimentation and surgically brilliant production. And it won’t stop.

It’s sheik and smooth like the models on the covers of magazines you don’t buy but can’t help staring at. It’s funny too. It’s funny in a covert coy way. Like a kid’s tv show that secretly pokes fun at adult themes like sex and politics. It’s funny enough to make you laugh. But just as your chest swells for a little cute giggle you catch the charred death scent of a cigarette and you can almost taste the burn of cheap whisky in the back of your throat: That’s the dark brooding shadows this album casts as you spin it so idly.

And that’s why my stomach and mind threaten to rebel (and expel.) How can you devour something with such a range of tastes? You can’t eat something salty and sour, spicy and sweat, hot and cold… Maybe a few of these combinations are delectable but the whole array? It’d kill you… you’d choke…

Thank god the album doesn’t force its schizophrenic characteristics on you all at once.

Instead the Gorillaz deliver these tastes in subtle sly hints and nudges. And most people would be utterly ignorant of the Band’s brilliance if they did not provide the LP with multiple listens. It requires slow and careful consumption. Take your time. Don’t try to stuff your face. You’ll hardly know what your eating and surely be left uneasy.

Let your mind nibble on the acoustic guitars driving delicately before you tackle the pounding funky bass lines. And only then try to sample the electronic pops and pings. And if you can stomach all that and still keep your composure while adding the synth enhanced atmosphere of the keyboards ONLY THEN try to attack the vocal diversity that this album radiates with.

And if you can manage all that, go ahead and try the next song- cause its nothing like the last.

Underground hip hop savvy moments bob and nod beside blues and rock elements. All of which seem content to share elbow space with electronic and dub theatrics. Pop cues abound in clever debuts threatening cheapen the albums depth- but they are a ploy. They are lures for the unwary, daring you to grow complacent and assume your hearing something you’ve heard before. BUT these touches are a tease- almost like the masterminds of this album want to remind you that they COULD make hopelessly hip and catchy songs like “Clint Eastwood” all day, but then you’d miss the noir hauntings that inhabit the album’s seedy underbelly in tracks like “New Genious (Brother)”.

The Gorillaz’s S/T first release screams and croons and beeps and blurts. It hums and bumps, drives and thunders. It is inspired and eons ahead of its time. This album either came from the future or is a masterpiece that will help shape the future.

Me? I’m out of the bathroom and adhered to my headphones. Don’t be a fool. Take your time, drink plenty of water and enjoy one of the best albums of 2001, one bite at a time.

Great concept album with catchy music.4
Conglomerate musical groups made from established talents making concept albums usually sound plodding and indulgent, yet this album is the complete opposite. The Gorillaz are an intense combination of musical styles and animation/illustration art that creates a multimedia buffet for the senses. Quirky, enjoyable music meanderings encompass rap. provided by Del tha Funky Homo Sapien, indie exotica from Miho Hattori, and mainstream pop kookiness issuing throughout from Damon Albarn of Blur. At first listen, the more memorable songs are ‘Clint Eastwood’, ‘Rock The House’ , ‘19-2000′ and ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’ and on further listening, all the peronal oddity of the group becomes obvious through songs like the manic ‘Punk’ and horror revive of ‘M1 A1′ which starts with the opening lines of the classic gore film ‘Day of the Dead’. This debut album is absolutely brilliant listening, and accomodates long hours of repeated listening; music to relax to, music to work by, music to dance with. Albarn’s London roomate Jamie Hewlitt provides a comic book fascade for the group supplying an animation art style that blankets the album and insert, and adeptly adorns their music videos, enhancing the music. The group also has a website which combines music, art, sound, information and oddities making Gorillaz the best multimedia experience going in this new millenium. In a time of rather highly hyped over heated media sensation boy/girl bands, repetitive rap acts and droning inexpressive guitar bands, the Gorillaz are a fresh, light hearted alternative that haven’t nearly begun to wear out a very warm welcome.
