Great song by a great band4
This song has been floating around for a while, and quickly became one of my favorite worship songs. Needless to say, I was excited to hear the DC*B touch added to it, and they didn’t disappoint. It is a fairly straight forward rendition, none of the excessive remixing you might enjoy from other Crowder tracks, but still a powerful and enjoyable version of a wonderful song.

David Crowder at his best!5
David Crowder is, in this reviewer’s opinion, one of the most unique and artistic voices in Christian Music today. A Collision is my favorite album of all time, and if this song is any indication, it may soon be beaten by Church Music. Combining the passionate singing of a new worship song with a band that works together in a fantastic way, I encourage any DC*B fans to check this one out!

One of my favorite albums – Pure Brilliance5
Like many people, I first found out about Owl City after Fireflies, the first single from this album, was released in 2009. After hearing how different of a song it was, I made sure to look up Ocean Eyes, and listen to the album. Every song is in its own little universe, and you cannot help but feel completely elated whilst listening to it. I owned the album for months and never got sick of it, and now that the deluxe edition has been released, it has breathed even more fresh air into what is one of the best albums of 2009, in my opinion. For the deluxe, there are 6 new songs, including a Hello Seattle remix which takes my breath away.

Hot Air Balloon – My favorite new song on the extra disc. It instantly starts out the collection of new songs with an entirely positive energy and uplifting lyrics, which are bound to pull you from a depressing mood and get you dancing. 10/10

Butterfly Wings – While a lot of the songs from Ocean Eyes sound more “produced” than Adam Young’s older works (such as his EP, Of June), this song leans more towards his older songs then anything else. However, it still retains that classic happy-go-lucky mood and is a welcome edition to the newer songs. 7/10

Rugs From Me To You – Even though this song only clocks in at 1:28, it impressed me from the very first second. In fact, it was a bit shocking how different it sounded from the other songs, and in a good way. A very welcome change that gives more diversity to the album if you ask me. 9/10

Sunburn – Nice chill song, perfect for summer. I can’t wait to play this song (as well as the entire deluxe edition album) at the beach, exercising outside, exc. Also, this song was on the soundtrack for 90210. 8/10

Hello Seattle (Remix) – Surprisingly, my favorite from the 7 songs, and one of my favorites from the entire Ocean Eyes album. Even though the song is just a remix of the classic Owl City song, Hello Seattle, the entire production is just magnificent. As someone who doesn’t normally like remixes and thinks they sound too similar, this remix sets such a electronic tone that I still have it on constant repeat. The beginning starts off nice and slow with a piano rendition of the song, then progresses slowly into a more upbeat melody, then finally topping off the song with electronic and dance beats that would make anyone want to dance or jam out. My one problem with it, is that it is mostly just the beat, and no words besides about five chants of Hello Seattle from the original song. 10/10

If My Heart Was a House – A slower jam from the album, but still great of course. The lyrics definitely are more traditional then the rest of the songs, but still make for a romantic song that I pleasantly enjoy. 8/10

Strawberry Avalanche – Definitely a favorite from the album, for sure. The upbeat tone is back, and makes me float away into a sea of strawberries. Definite summer song, and makes me excited for strawberries in the summer. Love it! 10/10

Overall, the original album by itself was incredible, but the deluxe edition’s 7 songs definitely hold their own up to the first 12 sounds. Sometimes these deluxe editions give you 1 or 2 subpar songs that are just being released to make money, but not with Owl City! For anyone who desperately needs a break from the overall negative tone of music being put out there these days, but still want a nice beat that will make them want to dance and sing, Ocean Eyes is the album for them. In fact, it’s an album for anyone really.

We all need some positivity in our lives, and listening to Owl City will for sure put you into such a happy, on top of the world mood. Perfect for kids and adults, I’m so happy that music like this is finally getting exposure to Top 40 radio and music in general. Go Owl City!

Best For Listening During Magical Moments in Hot Air Balloons5
First let me say, if you already own Ocean Eyes, feel no need in buying this deluxe edition, there simply isn’t that much to justify a re-buy. That being said, if you loved the best song of 2009, aka “Fireflies” and have been wanting to buy the full album, then this is a good choice for you. Because not only does this edition have the regular album on it, but it also adds a bonus disc with a few of their Internet-only singles which most of their fans will know from MySpace. “Hot Air Balloon” probably being the best out of the bunch with its carefree attitude that continues the trend of great lyrics found on the album. In fact, this bonus disc essentially is a continuation of what you heard on the album. The “Hello Seattle Remix” is essentially an instrumental intro to that song with some remixed elements.

Highlights Include:
Hot Air Balloon
If My Heart Was A House

Overall, fans who have heard most of the songs found on this release should avoid a re-buy, but for those new to the wonder that is Owl City, you should be very pleased with what you find. The bonus tracks fit well with the album, and should be enjoyable for anybody that likes the group. I only wish they could have added more to this release, or at least make the bonus disc an EP, but that’s usually the complaint I have with most deluxe editions, so do as you please. Just know, I want to see a live album, or an acoustic take on the band to tide me off until Adam Young’s next album.

Real Score for Ocean Eyes: 4.5/5
Real Score for the Bonus Disc: 4/5
Real Score for Ocean Eyes (Deluxe Version): 4.5/5

For My Thoughts Regular Edition, Here’s My Summarizing Paragraph:
Here’s the problem with synthpop/autotune, although it adds something different to what would otherwise be generic music, there’s only so much you can do with it, so it gets repetitive very easily. What makes Owl City different from every other artist using this technique is the quirky lyrics, and the absolute gold Adam Young drags out of his music. I still feel that synthpop makes for great songs, but not great albums. That’s the only thing holding ‘Ocean Eyes’ down, because it works better if you listen to the songs individually.

Excellent chilled out music with thoughtful lyrics5
Having heard ‘Fireflies’ on the radio and subsequently looking up the artist online I found myself drawn to the soft melodies and uplifting lyrics that make this latest collection from Owl City so delightful. So I bought the album hoping for more of the same and I certainly wasn’t dissapointed when it arrived. All tracks from start to finish are a delight to listen to and put me in mind of lazy summer afternoons and a sort of childhood innocence. Favourite songs include ‘Vanilla Twilight’, ‘Saltwater room’, ‘Fireflies’ and ‘Meteor shower’, the latter of which is a subtle but powerful worship song. The duet in ‘Salt water room’ is beautiful- the female voice is a perfect match for Adam’s vocals. Since the main disk has been in the player so much I just haven’t got round to listening to the bonus disk although I have heard tracks 1 and 7 from it via the website and instantly liked those so I’m certain the rest will be a great listen as well. So all in all this album is amazing- if you like ‘fireflies’ then you’ll love this entire album although you can always preview the songs via the Owl City website which plays several tracks on a continous loop. Personally I’m really delighted with it- it’s a real find!

Hautingly Beautiful5
I first heard this song while watching New Moon. The tone of the singers voice combined with the dramatic pace of the song pull me in and make me want to listen over and over again.

Lykke Li-New Moon4
I love this song, I’ve purchased all of Lykke Li’s music, available. She is in constant rotation on my MP3 Player.

I enjoy this song very much!4
This song always gets the volume turned up when it’s either on the radio or when I’m in the mode for a driving rhythm. I enjoy Buckcherry’s style, it harkens back to the days of grunge and Nirvana. Those were the days of real music! This song in particular is enjoyable to listen to whether your drawn to the words or just the beat.

Vocals That Grab You4
This song pretty much rules rock radio right now. Which is kind of sad, because if this is the best they have, they’re in trouble. The song itself doesn’t break any ground, and while its melody and overall musical structure may be fine, albeit a little radio-friendly, I think what really draws people into the song is the vocals. They’re kind of different, and they grab your attention. They’re not stunning in the least bit, but it’s different. And some might consider the song a nice change. However, wiser heads would look at the song and say, yeah, it’s alright.

Overall, the song doesn’t break much ground, and seems in the mold of a thousand before. However, the vocals grab you, and pull you into the song. In the end, Buckcherry may be a one-hit wonder. But then again, the song could just be a stepping stone for us to see what the group is really made of.

A Sorry Song1
Buckcherry’s “Sorry” pales in comparison to the OneRepublic/Timbaland collaboration. Buckcherry relies heavily on “moon/June” rhymes. It calls for karaoke… almost. The vocalist sounds like a Chad Kroeger clone,as if Buckcherry were slightly warmed-over Nickelback.

OneRepublic’s apologetic song is mesmerizing trip-hop,but Buckcherry is too much of a soundalike to Nickelback (their band names even look similar!) and Daughtry. It’s radio-friendly,as well as chock full of platitudes.

Buckcherry’s “Sorry” is a sorry,pathetic song.

A stunner!5
Bon Iver (essentially Justin Vernon and a couple of bandmates) burst out of the frozen Wisconsin north woods in 2007 with “For Emma, Forever Ago” – a record of quiet, contemplative and deeply felt songs triggered by the ending of several relationships, both personal and professional. Vernon took advantage of his months of isolation to craft a set of emotionally direct songs that sometimes employed rather oblique lyrics, and his not-for-everybody falsetto singing was said to be either enchanting (most critics) or off-putting (many music fans).

But as word spread about “Emma” and Bon Iver played more and more live shows (even turning up on late night TV on rare ocassions) his fan base grew, and an increasing number of online reviews labeled “Emma” an emotional masterpiece.

If you’re new to this artist, you should probably begin with “Emma” to get a sense of his unique style. Fans of that record, however, will find much to love on “Blood Bank,” which contains several tunes written and/or recorded around the same time period. The title cut is especially strong, with sharp lyrics and strong guitar work.

The first three songs could easily be outtakes from “Emma,” and all are easily the equal of anything found on that record. It’s the final cut, “Woods” that is the wild card, and the one that is likely to sharply divide dedicated Bon Iver fans. Making use of the Auto-tune technology currently in vogue among hip-hop artists like L’il Wayne and Kanye West, Vernon electronically distorts his vocals to the point where he sounds almost machine-like. Repeating four simple phrases over and over (“I’m up in the woods/I’m down on my mind/I’m building a still/To slow down the time”) and gradually adding high-pitched howls, the song builds to a kind of haunting grandeur, and the howls begin to sound like wolves far off in the distance on a frozen north woods evening. Some will hate it, but personally I think it’s a stunner, and it hints to me that Bon Iver is an artist who is brave enough and talented enough to challenge himself and his fans. That’s an encouraging sign for the future.

Soulful4
This EP is a good sign for people who liked Bon Iver’s first album. The tunes are soulful and share similar aspects to the LP: the falsetto voice layered multiple times, the trance-like repetition that builds to an emotional release, the cryptic lyrics.

There is also experimentation. “Blood Bank,” is recognizably written for a full band. “Beach Baby,” uses a slide guitar solo. “Babys” uses piano, one note repeated for tension. He uses a similar technique with his voice and guitar, but the piano adds a new tone. But these are small experiments.

The big surprise comes with “Woods,” when he uses vocoder. This song needed to go last, because I don’t know what you could put after it. In the beginning the vocals are high in the mix, but as the song progresses the same repeated lines are sung in different ways and recorded differently, some with harmony, some distantly reverbed; it all creates a huge emotional space. My favorite part is when he strains the heights of his register. Amazing.

Lovely!5
“For Emma, Forever Ago” was one of my favorite albums of 2008 and this little EP is a great way to kick off 2009.

I’m always a bit worried that a great first album will be followed by one filled with lesser tracks, as if the artist sunk his best work into the first, but can’t create at the same level again. All four of these songs are quite strong and, to my ears, extremely beautiful and catchy.

My only complaint is that I want more.

Good rythm.. .but some dirty lyrics5
Not for children period… even though the radio plays the “censored” version (which should be outlawed). Because it makes kids want to hear the “dirty” version.

Simply put, for Adults only!

As for the adults, a good hip-hop beat mixed with some interesting lyrics, this is the “Hey Must Be The Money” song that was popular a few years back.

Again, NOT for Children…
