Review of ‘La Roux’4
If you want something very fun, electronic, pop with a heavy 1980s vibe, La Roux is for you. What I enjoy most about La Roux and her debut album is that it is unlike anything on the radio today. She is not trying to follow any popular music trends; she clearly knows what genre of music fits her best and this album feels very retro while feeling very futuristic at the same time.

The Good: I loved the instrumentals/beats. When I first listened to the album, I thought this was some forgotten 1980s album. The vibe of the album sounds retro but doesn’t seem dated at all. It’s an odd blend of what made 80s music so fun while somehow keeping its hand and eyes set on the future (perhaps with the use of the computer to alter the voice, giving the album an at times robotic/electronic vibe). The music is carefree and the lyrics are also interesting; nothing entirely deep but at the same time, not frivolous and without a message. I also felt La Roux’s vocals stood out on the album. While some of the vocals are processed and run through autotune and computer tweaks, La Roux does sing in a very raw, organic manner on other tracks and is able to really communicate emotion and depth while many artist don’t seem to give any thought to what they are singing or how their voice can change the entire tone of the album.

The Bad: With all the synth and electronic treatment is what gives the album its flair and attitude, it also gets somewhat repetitive after a few tracks. This is the style carried out not on one or two tracks but on every track. In a way, it distracts and makes the tracks blend into one and makes some tracks fade or retreat into one another rather than standing out as they should.

In all, La Roux’s debut album does what few are able to do; she leaves a lasting impression and has the listener wanting more by the end. The music is addictive, fun, carefree and La Roux herself has a very unique style and her vocal style and musical preferences definitely give this album a lot of feeling and character. Definitely worth purchasing.

Listen To These Tracks: ‘Cover My Eyes’, ‘Bulletproof’, ‘Tigerlily’, ‘I’m Not Your Toy’, ‘Fascination’

Can’t stop listening, extremely catchy!5
I cannot stop listening to this album. I am crazy about La Roux! A friend told me to check out the track “Bulletproof” and I have been hooked since then. There are only a couple of tracks that I don’t really listen to and that is very rare for me. Very heavy on the 80s instrumentals and Elly Jackson’s voice is incredible. Probably my favorite song is “Going in for the Kill”. I’m also very fond of “Colorless Color, “I’m not Your Toy”, “Reflections are Protection” and of course “Bulletproof”. I haven’t found an album that I’ve liked this much in years. These are songs that I don’t mind getting stuck in my head.

Amazing5
La Roux is simply amazing! The songs are soo catchy with the great lyrics and tunes. I simple can’t get enough, there is not one song on the CD that I will skip when listening which is very rare these days. Very similar to an underground Lady Gaga, no she is much better than Gaga. I expect to hear much more from and about La Roux in the near future she is an extremely talented artist with such a beautiful voice. A must have CD!!

The great and the so-so…4
You ARE buying this for the piano and chamber music. The Ogawa piano works come from her four-CD set of Debussy’s piano works on the excellent BIS label. BIS has never produced a bad record, and this holds true here. While not getting unreserved accolades from reviewers, these productions have been warmly received. IMHO, she plays excellently, creating the wonderful moods that are incumbent upon a player of impressionistic music, and the recorded sound is superb. You get all of Vol. 1 and all of Vol. 2 except for the short track 14. You will lack tracks 13, 14, and 16-19 of Vol. 3, and tracks 14-21 of Vol. 4., so you are way ahead of the game value-wise already. The Cello Sonata (tracks 22-24) are also from a BIS release, so are excellent. The rest of the piano and quartet music are from the Denon label, and are quite good in performance and sound quality.

You ARE NOT buying this for the orchestral works. The Luxembourg-Fremont pieces are decent to be sure, but the major works performed by the Vienna RSO – Horvat (especially the important La Mer), how can I say this nicely, “ascend the heights of mediocrity…” The other orchestras are workmanlike, but in general, the orchestral works are culled from less-well produced releases (albeit the Luxembourg productions are, as I said, passable). So if you are just getting introduced to these works, please enjoy them, but you won’t be hearing the transcendent wind playing that is essential to pulling these works off in a way that impressionistic music demands, and can be, if performed by the most excellent musicians.

Nice Debussy Collection4
Claude Debussy composed around the turn of the century & I understand was an influential transition to modern composers. I have not listened to much solo piano but Debussy has to get five stars as a great composer. I understand that his music is considered impressionistic in style. Many of these pieces are like little paintings or images. I have been a huge fan of Bach & the Classical period so I am suprised that I really like this music. Everyone one probably has heard his famous Clair de lune, Two Arabesques and The Girl With The Flaxen Hair but there is much more great music here to explore. I appreciate being able dig into so much music at Amazon for such a low price. The quality of this is outstanding. I have several versions of the famous pieces and these hold up well, particularly the Peter Schmalfuss recordings. If I have one small nick to say about this set is that Noriko Ogawa’s piano does not sound as full or warm as I would like. That is not to criticise her playing. Thanks Amazon!

Lots of wonderful music here5
In the more than 8 hours of music here, we have some of Debussy’s most loved works. Most are for solo piano, in excellent performances, along with some orchestral works to round out the collection. Highly recommended.

Dance and Sing Sing Sing For Jesus People5
I was at Greg Laurie’s Harvest Crusades in August of 2009 when Chris decided to save this song for the last performance. It was a nice ending for the entire weekend of worship and music. The event was held in Anaheim Angel’s Stadium and the lights were turned off. Immediately Chris started to sing this song that makes you want to just get up and dance and praise Jesus and God. There were fireworks in the background going off and Chris really has a nice touch with this song. I wish dance artists would remake it into a dance song. It’s a beautiful song but has a great dance beat as well. Chris, you’ve done it again. NICE!

How To Choose Bikes For Sale

Picking out bikes for sale can be an extremely hard decision. In many ways, it is more difficult than picking out an automobile. After all, most cars are made for the same purposes.

Unless you are an off-roader, or someone who hauls around a lot of gear, you can probably buy a sedan and be happy with it. It is just a matter of picking out a car with enough cargo space and cabin space for your needs.

On the other hand, when you are picking out a bike for sale, you are dealing with a much more particular market. There are available bicycles for almost every purpose or need like dedicated mountain bikes, most at home on steep, unpaved paths.

Other ones are dedicated street racers, thin and sleek, perfect for high speeds on smooth roads. A lot of them fit somewhere in the middle. Some of them are even more specialized, only suitable for oval tracks or dirt-bike courses. Other bikes are set up to do tricks. The possibilities are endless.

If you are looking for bikes for sale just to get around the neighborhood, my advice would be to buy something cheap and practical. You can usually bikes for sale in the 200-dollar range. If you are willing to really look around at some garage sales, you can find one for either less.

The best kind of bike for a beginner is what is known as a hybrid bicycle. They tend to be very cheap, and they are easy to ride. Basically, they are halfway between a mountain bike and a road bike. This means that you can take them on mild off-road, on unpaved back roads, and on the streets.

Unlike mountain bikes for sale, they are not heavy and hard to drive on the long haul. Unlike road bikes, they are able to go on streets that aren’t paved. They are also a bit more durable than a road bike so, if you jump a curb, you probably won’t damage your frame, tire, or wheel.

Certainly, many people choose their bikes depending on their travel. When you take the same road every day that is on smooth roads and in bike lanes, you might want to think about getting a dedicated road bike. It is easier to ride and the weight is lighter than hybrid bicycles. Nowadays, taking a bike going to work is getting more popular especially with the high price of fuel. Choose a bike that suits the road you take everyday.

Half good – Half bad3
Beating out there sophmore album, ‘gasoline’ scars and souvenirs is an improvement, but its still a let down compared to thier self-titled debut so don’t get to excited. The first five songs are good, but then it seems like they put some songs on the cd just to fill up space, as all bands seem to do. ::sigh:: Not bad if your a true theory fan, but some heavier stuff would have come in handy on this so-so album.

Good find for Nickelback fans4
As the title says, this is a fine album for those of you who like Nickelback; in fact, Chad Kroeger apparently helped them early in their careers, and their sound reflects it. Lots of good heavy guitar work, catchy riffs, plenty of slower, more soulful stuff mixed in, and overall a pleasant listen. The title is appropriate – the album seems focused on the “scars and souvenirs” of relationships (mostly failed). “Bad Girlfriend” has gotten plenty of airplay (edited), but my personal favorites are the tongue-in-cheek “Hate My Life” and the revenge tune “Little Smirk.” This is an album where the vast majority of tunes are good listens – very little schlock here, which I appreciate. Required listening for Nickelback devotees…

rocki’n4
I highly recommend this album. I believe there are at least two more hit songs on it, although i think there could be more. This album seems to be along time comming and it is well worth the money.

New Wave, say hi to New Jersey5
Okay, so he’s copped everything he can from the early, angry Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, and he’s sounding a little bit Brit for a guy from the Garden State. But Ted Leo isn’t just another false idol in the neverending search for the second coming of The Boss. Leo’s often been compared to Springsteen, and there’s really something to it. They differ sylistically (instead of music from the birth of rock, Leo mines the insightful pop-punk of the gents mentioned above, plus the Clash, Television, and so forth), but both are all about intensity tempered by intelligence. Like Springsteen, the power of his music–to overwhelm the senses and summon strong emotion without shutting off the listener’s brain–makes itself known on album work but makes itself truly FELT only in live performance.

The album is, in whole or in part, a 9/11 reaction. This means it has the potential for both a built-in audience and a built-in cringe factor. But Leo doesn’t take the easy way out, on either score, and comes up with something rich in its ambiguities. Again like Springsteen, he manages to catch the complexity of characters in change–from the hesitant growing-up singalong of “Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?” to the searing depiction of a man’s belated awakening to the world’s brutishness in “The Ballad of the Sin Eater.” Throughout, there’s precise but casual playing, solid singing, and production which seems like a happy accident–of the kind which comes about after many hard hours on the boards. Stylistically, the band stretches from standard lightly-fuzzed power pop with rock-steady grace notes to encompass some quasi-folk strum and even some Celtic sounds. It’s fresh.

That said, this album is perilously close to a 2-star experience. Anyone who shoehorns the word “historicity” into a song risks crossing the barrier between really good Gang of Four and…well, really bad Gang of Four. But the band’s passion carries the day–Leo’s insight doesn’t become navel gazing, and his comments on world affairs aren’t the ego-stroking of your standard rock star but the genuinely uncertain musings of someone taking the measure of a world that’s changed.

Contender for best of 20035
Ted Leo just keeps getting better. Ted has been writing songs and playing vital music for several years now, coming up from the New York and D.C. punk scenes of the late 80’s and early 90’s. After listening to his work with Chisel, especially their classic “Set You Free”, it’s hard to imagine that release not being a welcome peak to any artist’s career. Following the demise of Chisel, Ted released the rousing “Tyranny of Distance” with The Pharmacists. Ted continues to evolve as a songwriter, including the best elements of punk, pop, folk, and soul in his thoughtful tracks. After giving so much of his time and energy to the independent music scene over the years, it’s almost surprising that Ted’s live and recorded work still crackle with such refreshing vitality. Ted seems to have a bottomless tank of energy and enthusiasm, and “Hearts of Oak” celebrates all of the joy and passion that exist in music today.

Just listen to the sound bites for the songs “Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone”, “I’m A Ghost”, “The High Party”, and “Hearts of Oak”. That should be enough to sell any respectable fan of rock and pop music on this disc. These are all great tracks, and the strength of “Hearts of Oak” doesn’t stop there. Ted builds and reflects upon each track, giving each song a distinctive voice, yet holding it all together as a cohesive collection that can (and should) be listened to from start to finish in one sitting. Lyrically and musically, this is one of the best CDs you can buy in 2003. In what is already shaping up to be a good year for music (with new releases from Cursive, White Stripes, Idlewild, AFI, and others), I can guarantee that Ted Leo & The Pharmacists’ “Hearts of Oak” will be topping many a year end best list. That shouldn’t necessarily influence your decision to buy this great disc, but quality speaks volumes and “Hearts of Oak” is loaded with quality.

Ted is also touring extensively with The Pharmacists in support of this disc, and their sweat drenched, upbeat, rockin’ live show is well worth the usually low price of admission. Buy the disc and check out the live show.

I Heart This Record5
Ted Leo writes songs every “rock revival” band wishes they could write. In essence, Ted Leo is one of the strongest voices in rock these days, and on Hearts Of Oak, he and his band The Pharmascists tighten their attack and produce some of the best straighforward rock n’ roll in years. Mr. Leo takes the best elements of Elvis Costello, The Clash, Billy Bragg, Chuck Berry, and The Stones and boils it all down into a vibrant and potent mix that trancends its influences. If bands like Phantom Planet and OkGo water-down the herky-jerky new-wave of Costello and The Cars for easy consumption, Mr. Leo is the real successor to Costello or Ocasik. Hearts Of Oak is just as strong as the fantastic The Tyranny Of Distance as Ted makes every vocal yelp, every guitar solo, and every lyrics burn. The guy is a genius, and I can say that with a straight-face and without fear that I might take that back a few years down the line. This is the real future of rock n’ roll, kids; Hearts Of Oak is timeless, fresh, and beyond satisfying.
