VISCERAL NO-HOLDS BARRED WHITE STRIPES
Approximately 59 minutes in length. The sound is very good, especially for a live recording. All the tracks are from a 2007 tour of Canada. The booklet has several atmospheric b&w and color photos of the band, audience, and related subjects. There’s a DVD that’s also for sale of this event, sold separately.
For fans of THE WHITE STRIPES,especially the intensity of the first few albums, this will be of great interest. This is the band, stripped bare to it’s core elements of Jack and Meg,doing what they do best-Meg pounding out a primal, visceral beat, along with Jack’s in-you-face distorted acoustic and electric guitar (along with keyboards and other instruments in places) in all it’s glory. His vocals are a throwback to the group’s formative years-very intense and immediate. The intensity of the live tracks on the earlier released “Walking With A Ghost”,are only a hint of this set’s power.
As an example, the first two tracks set the stage (no pun intended),and are pure WHITE STRIPES-these two tracks grab hold of you and don’t let go,and are a glimpse of whats in store. Track three has Jack playing acoustic, but playing for all it’s worth, with some great vocals. Then it’s back to the fired-up sound they are known for. The tracks vary from there, from his trademark distorted electric guitar,to his intense acoustic sound, which help with the pacing, and add interest This concert series was an attempt to get back to what they originally became known for. Most (if not all) the venues were small, out of the way stops, and often times the group was unknown to the residents. This fact pushed the band to focus on what they do best,no frills-straight-ahead-rock. Tracks range from all through the band’s albums, and all are given a no holds barred treatment.
From “Blue Orchid”,to “Jolene”,to “Seven Nation Army”,through”Icky Thump”,to other familiar (and not so familiar) tracks, this is a good example of THE WHITE STRIPES in all their glory-out to prove to an audience, that’s not familiar with them, just what they’re famous for doing in a live setting. The power that’s only hinted at on several of these studio tracks,is unleashed in a loud,in-your-face-assault. At times, the sound, the excitement,is so immediate, that you feel you can reach out and almost touch it-such is the intensity of these performances. The only thing I don’t like is the audience “participation”-there’s to much of it,and intrudes on the performances. This is one of those albums that has to be played loud in order to get the full effect of what this two-person band is capable of. And with two musicians, who know how to play their instruments to maximum effect, and who want to prove themselves (again) for listeners-this is the real-deal. Be prepared to be knocked back by their intensity,as they take each tune and make it their own (again),and re-define not only their own songs, but rock music itself. This is honest music-the likes of which we don’t get to experience to much today.
Like all live albums- this is not for the unconverted
Your enjoyment of “Under Great White Northern Lights” will depend on two things 1. You must already like the White Stripes and 2. You must enjoy the current incarnation of the White Stripes. First for the people that will like this- this is rough and raw. The sound is dirty as hell and the songs are played at maximum volume for maximum effect. This is the White Stripes even more stripped down than on their albums. Jack White’s vocals are more raw live than on record- the music acting as an exciter that pushes his vocals into higher registers. The guitar sounds like it is about to rip to pieces at any moment. Meg’s drumming is, well, Meg’s drumming- you can dig it or you can’t- Me? I can dig it. Meg’s simple yet rock solid bottom is what allows Jack to take flight and lose himself in layers of noise and chaos.
Now to the people on the fence- the set list definitely favors the newer material. The White Stripes seem to have lost much of the child-like innocence of the early records and have replaced it with a restless creativity, a darker sense of purpose and guitar tones that can test the patience of people more in tune with Jack White’s “McCartneyesque” songwriting style of the first 3 albums. BUT like most good live records this is not some contract filler or holiday season toss-off- this album records a unique moment in the band’s life- a time that perhaps finds them at a crossroads- this album and the tour behind it celebrated the first (hopefully not the last) decade of the band.
Look, in a nutshell- this is a live album- if you are a fan than you will find a lot to love here.
Jack and Meg DESTROY!!
Wow, what can you say? These two never cease to BLOW MY MIND! The level of Rock and Roll that they are putting out is incredible! Besides crushing chords and shredding solos, the rhythm guitar makes me think of seeing ACDC back in late 70’s early 80’s, fantastic. I’ve seen them twice (Get Behind Me tour) plus the Blackpool Lights video (which is insane!), but have never heard “Union Forever” live, this version gave me chills! I was going to see them in Alaska on this tour but then Meg’s health issues canceled it. I’m hoping that they will do at least one more big tour (please Jack & Meg!), I have to see them again. I hadn’t heard any live for awhile, just been listening to the studio albums (get them all), and putting this on made my jaw drop all over again. Being an old fogey (40’s) I was wondering awhile back if I would ever like a new artist again, then the White Stripes showed up. They took up the banner, and they are holding it up HIGH! Check it out! cheers.

The Little Things
YEAH!!!
See the movie, get the soundtrack! This song rocks ALMOST as much as Angelina Jolie.
Awesome song for a Boingo fan!
I’ve been a huge Oingo Boingo fan for decades, but of course I’m mostly resigned to listening to my old cassettes since the band broke up more than a decade ago. I was very pleasantly surprised to hear Danny Elfman’s vocals as I watched the pretty cool Wanted DVD.
The song is great, hard guitar riffs and pounding drums (no Boingo horn section though), and of course Elfman’s awesome voice. I bought the MP3 here on Amazon and have been very pleased with my purchase.
The Little Things track from
Saw the movie “Wanted” today and really liked this song, “The Little Things”. I did a search and found it on Amazon.com. The movie is excellent, and this song rocks. They also have a music video of this song with edits from the movie. [...]
Good stuff!!!

A Completely Original and Captivating Work of Musical Art
Those who’ve read my prior reviews on this subject know that I despised the “Twilight” movie with a fiery passion, but was a fan of the soundtrack. Now that they’ve changed directors as well as composers for “New Moon,” I checked the “New Moon” soundtrack album out with some degree of eagerness. I bought it the day it came out…and I was utterly blown away.
There is not one single dislikeable song on this entire album. “New Moon” is a completely new and original work of music; you cannot find the songs on this compilation anywhere else, with each song completely original and written specifically for the movie soundtrack. The artists range from the well-known to the obscure, from the folk-rock to the alternative, and the impressive range and skill of each musician is apparent from the get-go.
The album kicks into a broodingly moody gear with Death Cab for Cutie’s amazingly emotive “Meet Me on the Equinox,” which bleeds into the slightly punky punch of “Friends” by Band of Skulls. Thom Yorke, the lead singer of alternative rock legends Radiohead, contributes his own dark electronic track “Hearing Damage,” to be followed by the soft and introspective strains of “Possibility” by Lykke Li.
The Killers of indie-rock fame contribute the original “A White Demon Love Song,” which perfectly captures the complicated relationships between Bella, Edward and Jacob throughout the story of “New Moon.” Anya Marina belts out the lovely ballad “Satellite Heart,” which is followed by a slinky new remix of Muse’s new single “I Belong to You.” Bon Iver and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club each come in with their own folk/aternative rock songs (“Roslyn” and “Done All Wrong”, respectively), each track unique and lively in their own way — indeed, the “New Moon” soundtrack could easily have fallen into the simple category of ‘teen angst music’ but the overall quality of the songs and the mixing are enough to completely sidestep that bullet.
Hurricane Bells lively rock anthem “Monsters” again ramps the album up from the slowness while still managing to capture the overall, ethereally brooding sense that holds this unique album together. Sea Wolf delivers a punchy folk tune in “The Violet Hour,” which leads in to OK Go’s new track “Shooting the Moon,” a fun pop-infused folk/rock song that has a beat and a style all it’s own. Grizzly Bear’s darkly romantic “Slow Life” comes up next, and the final song for the album is “No Sound But the Wind” by indie/folk rock leaders the Editors, a lush and gorgeous piano ballad that carries us into the true star of this collection:
The final track on this compilation, however, is the true creme de la creme of this collection — an original score work for the movie composed by the new French composer Alexandre Desplat. Titled simply “New Moon (The Meadow),” the complex piano melodies and heartrending orchestrations perfectly illustrate everything Desplat needed to accomplish, and this particular song outshines every other song on this album. (At this point, I’m almost more excited about the score album coming out than the movie itself!)
Bottom line — whether or not the movie itself will improve on its predecessor is hard to gauge at this point, but this soundtrack is that rare kind of originality, that special kind of gem, that is hard to stumble upon this day, and yet this album managed to do it with grace. Introducing new acts, providing dazzling new material from old favorites, and mixing an album to keep it fresh while never losing the brooding cohesiveness of the project the mix is based upon is a difficult task, but “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has more than stepped up to the challenge — it hit a solid home run.
Five out of five stars.
Surprisingly Indie-riffic soundtrack
This soundtrack shocked the indie world. Who would have thought this teen pop culture phenomenon was going to have such a strong indie-centric soundtrack. It is a very downbeat soundtrack with moody songs from moody artists (that I personally love) for a moody movie. You can just feel the fear, impatience, longing, an inadequacy in most of the songs, which are primary emotions of adolescence and most vampire fiction.
Highlights for me were Thom Yorke’s (Radiohead) song “Hearing Damage.” Anytime I can hear new material from this guy I’m happy. It has a similar feel to his solo release, Eraser, which I thought was great. When I read about this soundtrack I was REALLY excited about hearing the Bon Iver & St. Vincent collaboration because I’m obsessed with St. Vincent’s album Actor. It definitely sounds more like Bon Iver versus Clarke but her haunting voice adds a lot the song. I really like Grizzly Bear’s “Slow Life. It has their normal haunting feel with unbelievable harmony.
Overall, this is a great soundtrack and since it’s geared toward teens it’s an awesome opportunity for them to hear from some of the best artists in music today. It does feel a bit like colliding of two worlds since indie fans typically don’t like their bands to “go mainstream.” However, I hope twilight fans grasp the uniqueness of so many great artists being on one soundtrack.
Great Soundtrack
As a fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the soundtrack and finally got my copy today. I am very pleased with this CD. I was a big fan of the Twilight soundtrack, but I can honestly say that I love this as well (maybe more).
Compared to the Twilight soundtrack, this is much quieter. With Twilight, it was a bit harder in sound and more fast paced. It fit with the hectic situations of the first novel. This New Moon soundtrack feels more somber and truly embodies the emotions at the center of the story.
This is definitely a must-have for fans of the series, or just fans of good music. But be warned, if you’re not into more indie music, chances are that you won’t care for this CD. But the indie feel is another part of why I really like this. Plus, I now have quite a few new favorite bands that I wouldn’t typically hear on the radio. My personal favorites would be “Meet Me On The Equinox” “Friends” “Satellite Heart” and “Shooting The Moon”.
I highly recommend playing this in your car on your way to see the movie in November; it gets you in the mood for the adaptation. But it’s also wonderful to listen to while reading the book. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what song you land on while reading, because each one is made amazingly well for the subject matter.
Oh, and you definitely get your money’s worth with this. There are 15 songs and they’re all of decent length, so for the $9.99 that you can buy the CD for right now, it’s a steal that’s sure to please.

Incomplete works, but a low price
At the special deal price of $1.99 (as the MP3 Deal of the Day on 12/30/08), this is a very good introduction to Beethoven’s music for those who are not into classical music, or who aren’t sure if they are or not, or who are curious and want to try something out. Go for it! It’s all to the good.
However, if you have already decided you like classical music and are looking at this set as a quick collection builder, you might want to keep looking elsewhere. It is still a bargain, but a more questionable one, at the “standard” price of $7.99.
My main gripe is that this is a collection of “best of” excerpts — almost no complete works, just individual movements and snippets cut and pasted together in a kind of hodgepodge. Maddening is that even when multiple movements are presented from the same work, they are not together, but scattered around separately in various places.
I am particularly puzzled by the 9th Symphony. This is the only one of the nine that is actually fully present, with all four movements included in the set. But they are not in order, scattered all around the place. For Pete’s sake, why?
The performances themselves are good, from what I have heard — but I haven’t listened to the entire set, and mainly orchestral pieces so far. There are some world-class orchestras present. I was particularly surprised and pleased to find the “Grosse Fuge” in a string symphony version with the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwangler. I would have bought that for $0.89 alone — which again is an argument that the set is a bargain.
The second and third movements of the Violin Concerto are from a version conducted by Michael Geilen; I believe this features Christian Tetzlaff, a top-rate Swiss soloist, on violin. Whether it’s Tetzlaff or not, it sounds good. It’s just a shame that the 1st movement, which I think is the real heart of the Violin Concerto, is not included.
Some symphony excerpts seem to be from a set from the mid-90s with the London Symphony Orchestra under Josef Krips; these are interesting versions as far as I’ve listened so far, maybe a little non-standard but that’s what makes them interesting.
The soloists in the sonatas and elsewhere seem to be strong players but not “superstars”. It’s difficult to make generalizations because there are really a lot of different players here. It all seems quite listenable so far from the selections I’ve listened to.
If the $1.99 bargain price comes around again, this is worth it without question. But there is a lot of bargain music out there, and listening to the movements these people have cut out — going beyond the “greatest hits” mentality and listening to full works from start to end — is one of the real joys of classical music. That being said, this set can be a great start toward appreciating this kind of music.
Well Done, Well Priced Collection
Although I would tend to agree with others in writing that this collection is lacking in that it’s only bits and pieces of Beethoven’s music that we love, but it makes up for it in quantity and quality. Yes, we may not have entire symphonies, sonatas, or quartets, but we have many parts from great ones! Although I own most of this music in its complete form, it’s worth buying this because I don’t have digital copies of that music. Also there’s some fabulous recordings here. Definitely worth 2 dollars.
What a bargin…
I am still downloading the 99 pieces and have only listened to one… Sonata No. 8 in C Minor for Piano, Op. 13 “Pathétique”: II. Adagio cantabile.
Just that piece alone is worth the price of admission.. What a great way to explore the genius of Beethoven’s large body of work, and by some of the best players around to boot!
At just 0.02 per piece (many over 10:00 minutes) this is the best bargain that I have ever come across on Amazon. The collection is over 15 and 1/2 hours… Do yourself a favor and downloaded now!

A Tasty Sampler
It’s impossible to fit all of Elton John’s hits from 1970-2002 into a two-disc compilation, even with the addition of a third bonus disc. During the seventies, the songwriting team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin had the Midas touch. Wisely, the first disc of this collection covers their heyday from 1970-1976. The song selection is superb, balancing hit singles with essential album tracks. “Your Song” was Elton’s first hit and the obvious choice for starting this collection. “Tiny Dancer” peaked at number 41 and, amazingly, “Candle In The Wind” wasn’t even released as a single. Being among two of Elton’s best and most recognizable songs, they rightly appear on the first disc. “Island Girl” is a lightweight song that is not well remembered, but was included because it hit number one on the charts! On the other hand, Elton’s excellent version of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” hit number one, but must have been excluded because it was a cover version of a Beatles’ song.
Like the import CD “The Very Best Of Elton John,” the second disc starts off with Elton’s number one song with Kiki Dee, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Whereas that previous collection only went up to 1990, this disc goes up to 2001. It’s great to have “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” and “Circle Of Life” from the Lion King, as well as “Written In The Stars” from Aida, on an Elton John compilation. However, I would have included them on the bonus disc to make room for other worthy songs from his regular albums, such as “Nobody Wins,” “Blue Eyes,” “Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)” and “Healing Hands,” to name a few. The second disc closes out on a strong note with the two best songs from Elton’s last album, namely the Lennonesque “I Want Love” and the autobiographical “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore.”
The limited edition, bonus disc is another reason for buying this collection. It has Elton’s live version of “Candle In The Wind,” which peaked at number 6, and his duet with George Michael on “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” which hit number one. “Live Like Horses” is an interesting curiosity, being a duet with Luciano Pavarotti. The last song on the bonus disc was recorded in 2002. It is Elton’s duet with Alessandro Safina on “Your Song.” Thus, Elton’s greatest hits comes full circle, including an incredible selection of fantastic songs in-between the two versions of “Your Song.”
Some notable omissions but a darn fine collection anyway
Yes I realize there is always considerable consternation among collectors about the plethora of “Best of” and “Greatest Hits” packages that are put on the market every year. Some artists simply don’t warrant a “Greatest Hits” collection while the music of more important and prolific performers is constantly being repackaged. But if you are someone like me “Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002″ is a fine value. This collection replaces 3 previous vinyl “Greatest Hits” albums I now own. I will be keeping those vinyl LP’s for the tunes that were not included in this particular package.
I must say that Universal has done an outstanding job with the series of anthologies they have released in the past couple of years. This collection offers up 34 of Elton Johns’ biggest and best. There is no doubt that everyone will probably quibble about a few of the tracks that were included as well as those that failed to make the cut. But overall, I am quite pleased with this one. Just about all the big ones you would expect to find are included. Among the hits that did not make it are 1979’s soulful “Mama Can’t Buy You Love” and 2 hits from 1982 “Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)” and the wonderful “Blue Eyes”. The collection comes in a very attractive package that includes a nicely done 40 page booklet. One of the unique features of the booklet is a fold-out section showing all 41 album covers from Elton Johns’ fabulous career. The remastering on these tracks is also first rate. Again, if the price of this collection was $29.99 I would be much more critical. But the price is quite reasonable for a collection you are sure to enjoy for years to come. Highly recommended.
Stunningly Comprehensive
There’s not many artists that have as much as success or that have lasted as long as Elton John has. While not perfect, this album, Greatest Hits 1970-2002, isn’t far from it.
The thick booklet contains many pictures of the artist himself and a nice biography of Elton John’s music career. Included in this biography are such things as what many of the songs mean and how he and his songwriter, Bernie Taupin, met and bonded through the years musically.
As good as the booklet is, it’s not half as great as the music that is encaptured on the two discs in this collection. From the first song of disc one to the last song of disc two, the songs are all in chronological order, all the way from the beginning of the 70’s to the ones from recent times. The first disc is as classic as classic can be. From the love songs such as “Your Song”, “Tiny Dancer”, and “Candle In The Wind”, to upbeat rockers like “Crocodile Rock” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”, to just plain timeless hits with the likes of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and “Philadelphia Freedom”, the first disc covers six years (1970-1976) of musical greatness.
The second disc may not be quite as strong, but it’s almost as great and just as essential. With it you have great more great songs from the late seventies (“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (With Kiki Dee) and “Little Jeannie”), the eighties (“Sad Songs (Say So Much)”, “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”, etc.), and more recent, more underrated pop hits such as “Blessed” and “This Train Don’t Stop Here Anymore.” Of course, everything in-between such as “The One”, “Sacrifice”, and the two major Lion King hits are also here to be heard at anytime you please.
With a two-disc compilation that includes not only the great hits that almost any classic rock and adult contemporary radio listener can still hear played these days, but also the more hard to find essentials (“Levon”, “Island Girl”, “Believe”, etc.), how can you go wrong with purchasing this compilation called Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 that barely costs more than a normal single-disc album? The answer is that you can’t! There’s also an extra compact disc that has the songs, “Candle In The Wind (Live)”, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me” (With George Michael), “Live Like Horses” (With Luciano Pavarotti), and “Your Song” (With Alessandro Safina) to make it even more worthy of your purchase.
Yeah, of course there are a few great songs that didn’t find their way onto this compilation, such as “Blue Eyes”, “Healing Hands”, and more. One I would’ve really liked to have on the album is “Club At The End of The Street”. Nonetheless, this is by far the best Elton John compilation that has ever been made so far. It’s surprisingly comprehensive and it’s cheap, making it a worthwhile sampler for any casual fan. Get it now, while you can!

Coach Zorra Designer Sneakers 8.5 or Coach Norra Tennis Shoes?
The majority of the reviews that I have read say that these Coach Norra Sneakers are damn hot & fancy as the whole high top design is what’s fashionable right now. On the other hand these Coach Zorra Shoes are what I would call old school sneakers that don’t look as fancy, but are very casual.
Not many will like them both as they were meant to match different tastes. Any girl should see those pretty calvin klein heels. The trims of the Coach Zorra Sneakers were made of leather while the upper part is made of Jacquard fabric – and you simply have to love their great design at least when it comes to materials used. These Coach Norra Shoes will serve you well as both your casual fancy footwear, but also well designed and durable sports shoes.
You will just love the embossed “C” logo on the Norra Sneakers and it is needless to say that the logo is all over both of the models, as usual and I am still waiting for the day Coach will think of a new pattern. The Coach Norra ones aren’t meant to be used for long sport session as they are not as durable as the Zorra sneakers and they don’t really even look similar to sports footwear. The high tops are what I would pick as I simply prefer the way they look and the fancy touch Coach has added to them.
I guess that checking out some images and blogs won’t hurt you, especially because these sneakers are really cool and pretty cheap!
Coach always makes shoes and sneakers of amazing quality and durability and that is why many people are willing to pay more money for almost the same models they could get at cheaper prices from other, less famous, designers.
